You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before the day you’re due to start work in the UK. This date is listed on your certificate of sponsorship. You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks when you apply from the United States.
When making your visa application, you will have to pay towards usage of the National Health Service (NHS). This is known as the health surcharge. It costs £400 per year for the duration of your visa and is payable in full, upfront when making your application.
Americans hoping to work in the UK will need a British or EU passport or be eligible for a tier 2 sponsor visa. Tier 2 visas are only available to what our government deem shortage occupation subjects which at the moment are: Maths, science with physics, Mandarin and computer science.
If you are unsure, our government’s website has a great tool for checking which, if any, visa you will need. You can find that here.
These visa restrictions only apply if you want to teach within the UK.
American teachers in the UK will need a Bachelor of Education (BEd), Master of Science in Teaching (MST), Master of Education (MEd) or Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) or equivalent and you must have an up-to-date state certification.
QTS, Qualified Teacher Status, is an accreditation given to qualified teachers in the UK; many schools see it as a gold standard for teachers.
American Teachers that require sponsorship visas will need to be eligible for QTS to gain sponsorship.
This will depend on which state you qualified in. For the majority, if you are state certified, then you simply need to apply for it, free of charge. For a few states however, you will be required to do an observation-based assessment; this is only available if you do not need sponsorship, as QTS will be a prerequisite for sponsorship.
